The CNR and geothermal energy

Italy's most active geothermal research body is the Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche (CNR, National Research Council) and, in particular, its Department of Earth System Sciences and Environmental Technologies (CNR-DSSTTA). The Istituto di Geoscienze e Georisorse (IGG, Institute of Geoscience and Earth Resources), heir to the original Istituto Internazionale per le Ricerche Geotermiche (IIRG – International Institute for Geothermal Research) founded in Pisa in 1970, is the most dynamic institute in geothermal energy. It participates in numerous Italian and international projects and is active in several associations (Unione Geotermica Italiana - UGI, International Geothermal Association - IGA, European Technology and Innovation Platform for Deep Geothermal - ETIP-DG, European Energy Research Alliance - EERA Geothermal). IGG collaborates with other CNR Institutes in national and international projects, especially in the field of exploration and resource assessment. Concerning the organisation of subsurface and geothermal data it collaborates with ISPRA at national level and with IGA and IRENA at international level. Heir to the National Geothermal Data Bank (BNDG), IGG created and manages GeoThopica, combining research with public service.
